13 y/o Chess Enthusiast, Now Alaska’s Youngest Director
By Regan Tunstall
Matthan Hanks, 13, is the youngest chess tournament director in the state of Alaska and one of just three club directors in Anchorage. I spoke with Matthan after hosting his latest event, to ask about his journey with the chess scene in Anchorage.
Matthan, who learned to play chess at age six, has been involved with the Alaska Chess Federation since 2023. ACF has tripled its membership in the last few years and hosted more tournaments for enthusiasts like Matthan.
Matthan decided to become a tournament director with the US Chess Federation to increase the number of competitive opportunities. While the process isn’t too complicated, there are different levels of directors that vary in requirements and regulations. There are currently seven USCF-certified tournament directors in the state of Alaska who are qualified to host US chess-rated tournaments nationwide. Currently, Matthan holds the club director title so he can host events for up to 60 players.
Matthan stated his favorite part of the game is the competitive nature and mental skill it demands. With a rating of 1118, Matthan is determined to cultivate his skill and drive for the game, while providing more opportunities for his peers in the community.
Now, Matthan is the co-founder of Kingslayer Chess League and hosts tournaments every month. His next move? He’ll be competing at this year’s Alaska State Scholastic Chess Championship for the chance to win prize money and be nominated to compete at the US Chess Championship of Scholastic Champions Invitationals.
